Tata Coffee
Tata
Coffee Limited is one of the largest integrated coffee companies
in the world. Till recently known as Consolidated Coffee Limited,
the company was initially formed in Edinburgh in 1922, and
later became an Indian company in 1943. Now a part of the
Tata Group of Companies, the company in August 2000 changed
its name to Tata Coffee in keeping with the corporate policy
of the Tatas to bring all its group companies under the TATA
brandmark. The company grows coffee on its own estates, processes
the bean, exports green and instant coffee, and retails coffee
under its own brands in the domestic market.
Karnataka is the main coffee growing region in India and
the operations of Tata Coffee are located in the prime growing
districts of Coorg, Hassan and Chikmagalur. The Head Office
is located in Pollibetta, South Coorg. The company has 19,721
acres under cultivation, with inter-crops of pepper and cardamom.
The coffee on the Tata estates is entirely shade-grown. The
company has centralized curing works at Kushalnagar, and exports
around 65% of its annual crop of about 9000 tonnes.
Tata Coffee grows and processes three specialty grades of
Indian coffee – Monsooned Malabar, Mysore Nuggets Extra
Bold and Robusta Kaapi Royale. Tata Coffee has won several
awards in 2002 and 2003 at the "Flavour of India - The
Fine Cup" cupping competition instituted by the Coffee
Board of India.
Tata Coffee has contributed significantly to the growth and
development of Indian coffee. Ivor Bull, then Managing Director
of the erstwhile Consolidated Coffee Limited, was instrumental
in the formation of the Coffee Board of India in 1942. The
company takes pride in its efforts towards corporate social
responsibility and the estate workers enjoy the highest living
standards and congenial working conditions.
